 II Corinthians

INTRODUCTION

HISTORICAL SITUATION

A member of the Corinthian church (or a prominent visiting minister) had, while Paul was visiting, openly insulted Paul (or Paul’s lieutenant Timothy). Paul left in order to spare the church additional grief but wrote a “letter of tears,” instructing the church how to set things in order. The church responded positively, but Paul felt the need to write in order to clear up any residual misunderstanding of Paul’s motives.

PURPOSE

Paul’s letter was a defense of his integrity and apostolic ministry. The letter also appealed to the Corinthians to be reconciled to him and one another. It also contained a request for an offering for the poor in Jerusalem.
